FLOWERS AND FROGS

CREATE-simple items/quick to do

  • Cut a simple flower and frog shape out of plain white or colored paper. If you are like me and can’t draw, use a template from a search online.
  • Color and decorate as desired
  • Glue to a Paper plate or sturdy paper or cardboard

EXPLORE-every child enjoys a treasure hunt

  • Take a walk out side and look for frogs and flowers. If it is off season, you may find dried flowers and rocks that are shaped like frogs. Just enjoy the outside and talking about my paper frog is my creation, a real frog is a growing and living thing.
  • Collect treasure such as pinecones; sticks; rocks. Whatever your child is interested in.
  • If weather does not permit outside exploring, take it inside and search for flowers and frogs on clothing; decorations; pictures in books and magazines; knick knacks

MUSIC-even if you can’t carry a tune, your child will love this. Music creates strong language skills as well as math skills.

  • Place your paper plate on the floor and sing and dance around it. The tune is “Ring around the Rosie” Act out as you sing.

Ring around the frog, ring around the frog

Hop and Croak and all fall down

(continue with jump around; hop around; run around; etc.) if you child is not walking, hold the plate and make circle motions while you sing.

Ring around the flower, ring around the flower

Grow and bloom and all fall down

(continue with variations as above)

  • Using your Frog and Flower plate once more, sing this song to “If you’re happy and you know it” Act out as you sing.

If you’re a frog and you know it, hop around

If you’re a frog and you know it, hop around

If you’re a frog and you know it and you’re very proud to show it

If you’re a frog and you know it, hop around

(variation: croak real loud)

If you’re a flower and you know it, grow grow grow

If you’re a flower and you know it, grow grow grow

If you’re a flower and you know it and you’re very proud to show it

If you’re a flower and you know it, grow grow grow.

(variation: bloom)

MOVEMENT-let’s get moving

  • line your paper plates on the floor and hop over (add more plates for a longer line
  • create a zig zag walking line for tots to go in and out of the plates (frogs and flowers)
  • hop like a frog
  • grow like a flower
  • wiggle your petals off
  • run around the flower and frog; hop around; go backwards around; go faster
  • toss the frog and flower as a frizbee
  • toss a rolled sock onto the plates as a ball toss or mount it to the wall as a target

Add on– find a book to read that has frogs or flowers or both and see how many of each you can find.
